In contrast, most reactors in the West, and all of the commercial power plants operating in the United States, are based on a design that relies on water to keep the nuclear reaction going. If the water heats up, the power drops. If a substantial amount of water boils or leaks way, the reactor shuts down. It cannot keep running. How Did the Soviets Let This Happen? The USSR had a lot of smart engineers. They’d beaten the United States into space and swiftly electrified and industrialized a vast country. But as the HBO series points out, the country suffered from extreme management problems and a pattern of secrecy that wasn’t compatible with industrial safety. The KGB—the USSR’s secret police and intelligence agency—routinely suppressed news of nuclear accidents, keeping them secret even from reactor operators who could have learned lessons from those events. Another RBMK reactor had suffered a mishap that should have been a warning for the Chernobyl operators, but this was kept from them.|I think this might be the maxipad with wings commercial that Karen was talking about. The second episode was a bit better. There was a bit more narrative and character development. I think I was looking more documentary or reliable docudrama than what the series is delivering thus far. The first two episodes seem more like Hollywood than history. My view was in line with a review I just read in the New York Times. “Chernobyl…” takes what you could call a Soviet approach to telling the tale. This is incongruous, since one of the messages of the program is that Soviet approaches don’t work. But there it is: the imposition of a simple narrative on history, the twisting of events to create one-dimensional heroes and villains, the broad-brush symbolism. The Chernobyl disaster was unprecedented and hopefully will never happen again. The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere and downwind - some 5200 PBq (I-131 eq). Ukraine could come have up with a solution by itself, but “it should have started 10 years ago,” says Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky, the director of the Kiev Center of Political Research and Conflict Studies. “Of course Kiev doesn’t have the money to repair and upgrade the reactors, but there are still ways to solve this. One of the most efficient ones lies in Moscow, in the Kurchatov nuclear research institute. The problem has fallen victim to Kiev’s politics. Despite the apocalyptic buzz, predicting a new Chernobyl is taking things too far, Ukrainian experts believe. The danger is no less real, however, even if it’s less dramatic in scale. The reactors might not be about to melt down and send a massive radioactive cloud billowing into the atmosphere, like Chernobyl did - instead, they will simply stop working, plunging large parts of Ukraine into a blackout. ’s up, switch off - it would be left without half or more generator assemblies. Sixty percent of our energy comes from nuclear power plants - this means we would have a blackout.  Chernobyl 6 Episode.
Here we are again on a Friday! First of all, I had major issues with getting images on this post. Every time I'd hit return, everything above would disappear. And after puzzling over this for a while, I just decided to work with it the way it is. Yesterday I went to the Girls State Track Meet in Des Moines. Middle Sister qualified in the 3000, so it was exciting to watch her compete with some great runners. It was a beautiful day, but I am glad Middle Sister ran in the morning since temps in the afternoon were over 90 degrees. We haven't seen weather like that since last summer! 1. RIKILIO Pajama Set- I used to wear pajamas every night. I've moved to the type of person who wears their exercise clothes to bed so I will feel more obligated to get up and work out when my alarm goes off (this trick only works some of the time). If I were a pajama wearing person, I'd really like these.  Chernobyl Episode 5 watch online.
